my favorite playlist

A slightly unusual recommendation from me, given my marked preference for albums, but I wanted to recommend my favorite playlist, Lucid Dreamer.

I didn't make it. Well, I sort of did—it was guest curated a number of years ago on Spotify by a composer named Max Richter and eventually they went back to the normal list, so I made an archived version of Richter's selections.[1] A lot of Richter's own stuff is on there, which makes sense, and he's pretty good, so I don't care. There's also, wildly, an entire Catholic mass in Latin as arranged by a Renaissance-era English composer put right next to a song from the Game of Thrones sound track. It's an eclectic mix, but it really works.

I use it to study and sometimes to sleep. It's really, really chill.[2] I've needed some of that chill lately, so I've been listening to it a lot, and I'm so appreciative of the skill with which it's been put together.

  1. This was actually a stroke of luck. They didn't announce that they would be changing the playlist back to its usual content before they did it, so I went in one day to listen and found it all switched up. But I happened to have it downloaded on a device where I hadn't used Spotify in a while, and it was still there, so I turned off the WiFi before it could sync up and screenshotted the whole list. I think there are one or two songs I couldn't find, but I no longer remember what they were. ↩
