coca-cola cake
This is a favorite family recipe (it's what my dad usually makes for my birthday). No, it doesn't end up tasting like coke per se. It tastes a little different from your standard chocolate cake—and it's very sweet—but not in a "there is soda in this" sort of way.
recipe
ingredients
cake
- 3/4 c. (85g) butter
- 3 oz. (85g) unsweetened chocolate
- 2 1/4 c. (450g) sugar
- 3 eggs
- 2 1/4 c. (270g) flour
- 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 2 1/4 c. (18 oz/1.5 cans) Coca-Cola
frosting
- 1/3 c. (38g) butter
- 1 1/2 oz. (43g) unsweetened chocolate
- 1 1/2 c. (300g) sugar
- 3/4 tsp. salt
- 3/4 c. (170g) evaporated milk
- 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
instructions
cake
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter and flour a 9x13 pan.
- Melt butter and chocolate over low heat. Mix in sugar and eggs and stir until combined.
- Whisk together baking soda and flour. Add the wet and dry ingredients into the chocolate mixture and mix thoroughly. The batter will be very runny.
- Pour into prepared pan. Bake for 45 minutes.
- Poke cake all over with a fork and set on a wire rack over a baking sheet (some frosting will spill over the sides of the pan).
frosting
- Melt butter and chocolate over low heat. Mix in sugar and salt and stir until smooth. Add evaporated milk slowly.
- Bring mixture to a boil. Cook for two minutes at a boil, stirring constantly.
- Take mixture off heat and add vanilla. Pour frosting over top of cake while cake is still warm.
