reading (modern) classics

I talk about this in more detail in this post, but basically: I'm trying to read more modern (i.e. post-1500) classics, starting (mostly) with English-language novels. I'm not including more than one book per author, at least to start.

I won't make myself finish anything if I really hate it, but I do want to give each of these a real chance. I'm also not setting a time limit or anything—this is going to be the project of years.
